Orangeburg, SC - Bowen Turner, the son of an investigator for a local attorney, was accused of raping 3 girls - one of which allegedly occurred while he was out on bond from the first two.
Turner served less than a year and a half in jail, 16 months to be exact, and was released Wednesday. He was released with orders to meet with a supervision officer each week and to complete one year of community service.
This comes after the outrage of his sweetheart plea deal in early 2022 that was negotiated by Prosecutor David Miller, and Tuner's Defense Attorney and Democratic SC State Senator, Brad Hutto. The plea deal was 5 years probation and a guilty plea of first degree assault and battery.
One of his alleged victims, Dallas Stoller, committed suicide in 2021. In light of her death, the sexual assault charge was dismissed. She was the second person to come forward against Turner, and she allegedly experienced bullying and harassment from coming out against him.
According to Stoller's family, she was found covered in bruises and unconscious after the rape. Tabatabai told FITS News , “One of her eyes was completely bloodshot from strangulation....her neck was completely black and blue from being strangled.”
While Turner was out on bond from the Stoller case, he allegedly raped a pastor's 16 year old daughter during the dozens of times he violated his house arrest.
Chloe Bess said, “I remember him coming out, and I was asking my friend to come pick me up, or when she was coming back....The phone conversation ends, and I just remember him pulling me into a tree line, there’s a truck parked there and we go behind the truck. The next thing I know I’m on the ground. And he’s a lot bigger than me, I only weigh 115 pounds, I’m really tiny,” while speaking of an encounter she had with Turner at a party in 2019.
Turner also violated his house arrest more than dozens of times, according to court documents. He went golfing, shopping, and eating out. His lawyer and Democratic State Senator, Brad Hutto, said in an email to Judge McFaddin, “As part of the therapy for his depression, [Turner’s] doctor told his parents that he needed to get out of the house just a little bit" as if this was a good excuse.
The prosecutor in this case is seeking to become a circuit court judge. Karl Stoller, Dallas Stoller's father thinks this points to larger issues. He said, “This has never been and will never be completely about Dallas....This has opened my eyes to a whole set of problems we have in our state, maybe nationwide, with the way victims are handled. Let’s not run out of gas on that.”
