Homeless In The Hill - Rock Hill

Updated: Nov 12, 2022

Part 2

A few months ago we covered a homeless encampment in Rock Hill right off of White Street. At the time there was a bit of trash in the area, and we could see where someone had left the homeless residents fresh fruit. We decided to revisit that encampment just last week, and it has grown.

There is now a tent erected with blankets hung all around. There are dressers and furniture. The most striking difference is the massive amount of trash that has accumulated and the arrival of the "bathroom". The bathroom consists of mounds of toilet paper and human fecal matter. Once again, food was left out for the individuals who live back here.

One resident exclaimed, "This is a growing problem the city needs to get ahold of. We see 'em everywhere. I feels bad for them, but can't stand the smell and trash."

"I think they was stealing my shorts off my stoop. I left a few whole 'ports out to see what would happen and sure enough they was gone the next morning." - Rock Hill Resident

A local mechanic shop in the area had to put up a fence due to theft of catalytic converters, and they said they wonder if that's where they are going.

Last week we covered the growing homeless problem on Cherry Road. County Council Candidate, Jonathon Moreno, reached out to us regarding it. His official statement to us was this, "As an employee for the Burns family owned business. We have endured a homeless concern for the last few months. We have expressed our concerns on multiple occasions. We have had burglaries, car break ins, trespassers, indecent exposures, human poop, and more. In our area we have had attacks on women, shootings at the cookout and drug sales. We are being ignored."

Many residents are wondering what their elected officials are going to do about the growing problem. There is a correlation between the increase of homeless residents and the rise of crime. You can look at this map to see where you live and the reported incidents to be more aware of your surroundings. https://communitycrimemap.com/

Stay with us as we continue to explore the "Homeless In The Hill".
