Walhalla, South Carolina, is a beautiful town in the northwestern part of the state. Nicknamed the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is a popular place for ecotourism, capturing panoramic mountain views, proximity to several lakes, including Jocassee and Keowee, and several other attractions.
From 2019 until 2021, the area would experience several deaths and disappearances that can only be classified as strange, which would forever haunt this sleepy mountain community of almost forty-one hundred. The Lantern will cover each case in depth in a series of articles titled Mysterious Deaths and Disappearances of Oconee County.
Laura Ann Anders was officially ruled a missing person on January 2, 2019. She was last seen approximately eleven miles from Walhalla near Vernon Mill Road in the Mountain West Community. Her disappearance is the only one listed that did not occur in the same proximity as the others. Ander's case is not considered tied or linked to any of the other cases at this time; however, the disappearance is within the timetable and the oldest on the Crimestoppers website, occurring just twenty-six days before the death of April Jones.
Thirty-seven-year-old April Jones was found dead on Rock Crusher Road around 1:00 a.m. in Walhalla by her husband on January 28, 2019. Mrs. Jones, who had a history of drug problems, was found in a workshop on the property. Her husband Andy returned home from work when he noticed a light shining underneath the door. Once Mr. Jones entered the building, he found April Jones lying on the floor. The official cause of death was a combination of an overdose and hypothermia.
This case is intriguing because April Jones was last spotted being dropped off by two guys in a truck at a next-door neighbor of Jones on Saturday. She supposedly stayed overnight and left the following morning. What occurred during the time window when Mrs. Jones left her neighbor's house before she was ultimately found dead by her husband, and why did Jones lock herself in a workshop on their property with no heat inside? She had a key to the home and could have gone inside. Furthermore, why was her body covered in bruises with rope burns? While we may never know the answer, her case is considered a piece of this deadly puzzle in Oconee County. Foul play was not suspected at the time of her death.
Each case brings a new twist and added piece. Below is the complete list of missing persons from Oconee County.
